What is Pilonidal Sinus?

Pilonidal cysts or sinuses typically occur between the ages of 15 and 35. Although usually found near the coccyx (tail bone), the condition can also affect the navel, armpit or genital region, though these locations are much rarer.

One proposed cause is ingrown hair. The disease starts with a small dimple-like depression. Broken hairs travel into the dimple and form a sinus, which can get infected due to prolonged sitting and sweating. Continued infection in a low-oxygen environment leads to an abscess, which can burst to give continuous foul-smelling pus discharge.

Treatment at DLPC

Treatment of a pilonidal cyst is excision of the cyst. If there is an abscess, it needs to be drained. The sinus needs to be excised; the wound can be left open to heal, or closed by plastic surgical methods (which may increase local morbidity).

DLPC Recommended

Laser Pilonidoplasty

We treat pilonidal sinus with Laser Pilonidoplasty, an advanced method that avoids major morbidity, helps patients recover faster and without major dressings. It is a painless surgery and the patient can resume daily routine activities on the same day.

Why treat early — Implications

  • A pilonidal cyst, if not treated early, can get infected, grow in size and form an abscess.
