What is Piles?

Piles is a very common condition in the anal/rectal area. It happens because of swelling of the soft tissue cushions inside the anal tract.

These anorectal cushions are essential for control of the anal tone along with the sphincter muscles.

Due to the swelling, they may become painful, may bleed, or may even protrude out of the anal opening.

Treatment at DLPC

Treatment begins with conservative medical management along with dietary and lifestyle modification. The choice depends on the grade/severity of the disease. Non-surgical options include rubber band ligation (RBL) and injection sclerotherapy.

Conventional surgery

Open haemorrhoidectomy involves cutting the piles and stitching the remnant tissue — associated with pain, bleeding, larger wounds, infection and longer hospital stay

DLPC Recommended

Laser Haemorrhoidoplasty

For intermediate, symptomatic or bleeding piles we recommend laser surgery, where the swollen tissue is not cut but shrunk back to its normal position. It is a shorter procedure with less post-operative pain, no loss of bowel control, shorter hospital stay, no post-op antibiotics, no dressings, fewer follow-ups and an early return to routine.

DLPC Recommended

Stapler Surgery

For higher-grade piles that prolapse and hang out of the anus, we recommend stapler surgery to correct the prolapsed tissue and reduce vascularity.

Why treat early — Implications

  • If left untreated, haemorrhoids can lead to complications such as thrombosis and/or strangulation.
  • Prolonged bleeding from piles can lead to severe anaemia and can be life-threatening.
