What is Appendicitis?

The appendix is a small, finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine. Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes inflamed or infected, causing severe abdominal pain, fever, vomiting and other symptoms.

Appendicitis

Symptoms to watch for

  • Loss of appetite
  • Low-grade fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tenderness on right side
  • Pain starting near navel shifting to right lower abdomen

Common causes

  • Obstruction by stool foreign body or tumour
  • Lymphoid hyperplasia
  • Infection

Treatment at DLPC

The primary treatment is surgical removal of the appendix (appendectomy). Antibiotics may be prescribed for a mild or early-stage infection; if symptoms do not resolve, the patient needs immediate surgery or elective surgery after four to six weeks.

DLPC Recommended

Laparoscopic Appendicectomy

We recommend Laparoscopic Appendicectomy — the abdomen is inflated with a harmless gas and the appendix is removed through small (~5 mm) incisions using thin instruments. This avoids larger incisions, recovery is faster and patients can usually go home the next day.

Why treat early — Implications

  • If untreated, an inflamed appendix can rupture and release bacteria into the abdomen, causing peritonitis.
  • Peritonitis can lead to sepsis, shock and multiple organ failure.
